This is quickly changing as the studies of exercise science and biomechanics are more readily applied to yoga, moving us toward a more integrated view of asana that recognizes the importance of muscular strength as well as flexibility. Our shoulders are arguably the most complex joints in our bodies. However, because of all of the modern conveniences we have available to us, we rarely take full advantage of our potential shoulder movement. For the vast majority of our day, we use only a tiny portion of our shoulders’ possible range of motion, which can leave them stiff and in pain. Lack of varied movement at the shoulder joints can also lead to more severe issues such as tendonitis, bursitis, and frozen shoulder.
